Speaking

One of the nation’s leading experts on mitigation, criminal justice reform, and the human stories behind violent crime.

Elizabeth Vartkessian is a nationally recognized mitigation specialist and the founder and executive director of Advancing Real Change Inc., a nonprofit that creates a more just world by advancing empathy, dignity, and equity within and beyond the criminal legal system. By investigating the life histories of people accused of crimes and training defenders nationwide, ARC, Inc. reduces sentences and promotes true justice.

Her work is not about declaring innocence. It is about uncovering the personal and generational trauma, deprivation, and life circumstances that shape human behavior. She has spent thousands of hours speaking with parents, siblings, teachers, and neighbors as she's brought forward the full context of a person’s life — making the case for dignity, accountability, and a justice system grounded in repair rather than retribution.

Drawing from her groundbreaking book, The Deserving, Elizabeth delivers powerful, story-driven talks that challenge assumptions about guilt, punishment, and what true public safety requires. She offers audiences a rare inside view of the system and a hopeful, humane roadmap for change.
